Marriage Process

WHAT'S INVOLVED IN GETTING MARRIED ON MAUI?

The State of Hawaii requires a marriage (or civil union) license to be obtained within 30 days of your wedding ceremony. Please refer to the step-by-step marriage process guide below for more information.

— STEP 1 —
APPLY FOR MARRAIGE OR CIVIL UNION LICENSE

You'll need to apply online for your marriage (or civil union) license through the State of Hawaii Department of Health. Most everyone applies for a marriage, not civil union, license as the same-sex marriage is recognized in many states today. You and your prospective spouse (or partner) will each provide personal information such as the legal name, date of birth, and parents' names. It's a good idea to be consistent with how you type (e.g., upper & lower case, upper case only) as the core information will be printed on your Marriage Certificate exactly how you entered it. As part of the application process, you'll find a list of Marriage Performers (those who will officiate your wedding ceremony) authorized by the State of Hawaii, from which you can select one for your ceremony. Once you are finished filling out the application form, you'll pay the non-refundable processing fee of $65 online. Your application for marriage (or civil union) license remains in the system for one year for marriage license insurance. Click the button below to get the application process started.

— STEP 2 —
MEET WITH A MARRIAGE LICENSE AGENT

After you apply for your marriage (or civil union) license online, you'll need to schedule a meeting with a Marriage & Civil Union License Agent authorized by the State of Hawaii. Both you and your prospective spouse must appear in person for this appointment. You'll need the ID # on your application form. The Agent will verify your identity by asking many of the same questions you answered in your application form. If you are a minor, divorced or widowed within the last 30 days, or your name does not match your name on the legal documents, you will need to supply additional information. Find out more HERE. You'll need to pay the Agent a service fee of $5 at the time of meeting (cash or Venmo, preferred). Once this step is completed, you will be given your marriage (or civil union) license. Your marriage license is good for 30 days of issuance. Call Mike or Masami to secure your appointment. We are located near Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, West Maui. If you are unable to travel to Kapalua, we may be able to come to your location for an additional travel fee (separate from the $5 service fee) pending our schedule availability.

— STEP 3 —
OFFICIATE YOUR MARRIAGE

Once your marriage (or civil union) license is issued, it is good for 30 days during which you must have your marriage officiated by a Marriage Performer authorized by the State of Hawaii. If you miss this window of time, you'll have to start the process all over again. Remember your marriage license application fee is non-refundable. Your wedding can be officiated by a justice at a courthouse. You can have a judge or Marriage Performer come to a location of your choosing such as a beach or private residence. If you wish your family or friend officiate, s/he must obtain a one-time Marriage Performer authorization from the state of Hawaii prior to your wedding ceremony. Many hotels also offer wedding packages. The size or religious (or non-religious) nature of your wedding does not matter as long as it's officiated before your marriage (or civil union) license expires. Once your wedding ceremony is completed, you will receive your marriage certificate from the State of Hawaii Department of Health via the mail.
