Marriage Process
WHAT'S INVOLVED IN GETTING MARRIED ON MAUI?
The State of Hawaii requires a marriage (or civil union) license to be obtained within 90 days of your wedding ceremony. Please refer to the step-by-step marriage process guide below for more information.
— STEP 1 —
APPLY FOR MARRAIGE OR CIVIL UNION LICENSE
You'll need to apply online for your marriage (or civil union) license through the State of Hawaii Department of Health. Most everyone applies for a marriage, not civil union, license as the same-sex marriage is federally recognized today. You and your spouse-to-be will each provide personal information such as the legal name, date of birth, and parents' names. You'll find a list of Marriage Performers (those who will officiate your wedding ceremony) approved by the State of Hawaii, from which you can select one for you. Once you are finished filling out the application form, you'll pay the processing fee of $65 online. The marriage (or civil union) license is good for 90 days. Click the button below to get the application process started.
— STEP 2 —
MEET WITH A MARRIAGE LICENSE AGENT
After you apply for your marriage (or civil union) license online, you'll need to schedule a meeting with a Marriage & Civil Union License Agent approved by the State of Hawaii. You'll need the ticket # on your application form. The Agent will verify your identity face to face by asking many of the same questions you answered in your application form. You'll need to bring a service fee of $9 in cash to pay the Agent at the time of meeting. Once this step is completed, you should receive your marriage (or civil union) license within a couple of days via the email. Call Mike or Masami to secure your appointment. We are located near Ritz-Carlton in Kapalua, West Maui.
— STEP 3 —
OFFICIATE YOUR MARRIAGE
Once your marriage (or civil union) license is issued, it is good for 90 days during which you must have your marriage officiated by a Marriage Performer approved by the State of Hawaii. If you miss this window of time, you'll have to start the process all over again. Your wedding can be officiated by a justice at a courthouse. You can have a judge or Marriage Performer come to a location of your choosing such as a beach or private residence. Many hotels offer wedding packages. The size or religious (or non-religious) nature of your wedding does not matter as long as it's officiated before your marriage (or civil union) license expires. Once your wedding ceremony is completed, you will receive your marriage certificate from the State of Hawaii Department of Health via the mail.
If you'd like a referral to a local Marriage Performer we highly recommend, let us know. We'd be happy to share his contact information to make your special day absolutely memorable!
